Preliminary Statistics
Sound Levels measured inside of the TJ with the RadioShack Sound Meter.
Jeep Specification:
Good Year MT/R 33x12.5
Edelbrock IAS Shocks
OEM Hardtop
A layer of Herculiner
OEM Carpet
Full Steel Doors
'A' Weighting was used.
Unit is in dB. All the categories are sampled over 5+ different times.
Highway Average
(Low, Avg, Max)
(74.75, 80.25, 88.25)
Local Average
(Low, Avg, Max)
(60.75, 73.25, 80+)
Idle
No A/C
(Low, Avg, Max)
(51, 55.57, 61)
A/C Fan1
(Low, Avg, Max)
(51.67, 55.5, 61.83)
A/C Fan2
(Low, Avg, Max)
(54.57, 57.42, 62.42)
For reference,
In a quiet room a normal conversation is about 54dB.
A TV turned on that you can hear comfortably about 8 feet away maxes out at 61dB. At least for me.
A lawn mower is 90dB according to NIOSH.
The NIOSH, (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) shows various levels of noises and warns about the hearing loss.
The website warns any sound level above 85dB can cause hearing loss!
My TJ showed 88+ dB on the highway. |

The write up will be postponded indefinitely. My RAID HDD has lost all of its partitions due to malware infestation.
I will do a partial write up/review on this intead. Meanwhile I am going to rephotograph key procedures.
Thanks for your patience,

Sucks about the HDD, I've had it happen before too.
Did you get/have any readings from the project once it was done? |

I am working on that right now. I will post the summary in a week after gathering some data. |

Thats cool ! I modified a poncho liner into a softtop liner & thought about soundmatting the whole thing. I dont think I would want that to be my floor though . . . Kills too much utility in the name of comfort |

I hear you on the floor. I was very very hesitant on the floor decision. I originally had Herculiner on the floor but I do a lot of highway drive and with MTRs and it was to a point unhealthy (for my hearing). That is why I did it.

I took the sound meter today and drove to take some reading. The average came out to be 76 db. I will be going up to Charlotte, NC tomorrow which is about 220 mile drive. I will post up better stats.
Just remember, the readings I am getting are after swapping out my factory exhaust system to the after market system which is known to be louder but the jeep overall is still quieter!!
I will get more measurements before I swap in the quiet tires.

Interesting thing I saw in JP magazine the other day at the mall, they layed down a layer of Herc, dynamat, and then another layer of her to keep out any water dirt, and they noted a 8db drop at 45 mph, though not in a TJ, it could be worth a shot |

I would love to see that article and how they performed the actual test.
Sound measurements taken in A or C weighting can differ so much and could be very misleading. The 'A' weighting is close to what human hears. However, notice I said, "close," you might feel and hear significant difference in noise reduction but it will only decrease in 1-2 dB. The reason is we have different frequency range that we hear than what the sound meter hears. Also, unit of bel(b), this case decibel is log scale. This means if you have 3dB difference, that is approximately twice difference of the original.
I actually wonder how they applied the Dynamat on top of the hercuilner properly. Herculiner has very very rough texture and this is not good for the sound deadening mats to adhere firmly/correctly.
I have the herculiner and it is not so much of a sound insulator. The factory carpet does a better job of sound insulation than the herculiner. I have a very thick coat of herculiner on my tub.
On top of that I have sound deander/undercoat from Duplicolor, to smooth out the herculiner. This had to be done because the mats I tried, Second Skin and the FatMat won't adhere firmly to the herculiner surface.
Well, since it is not done on a TJ, so I can't say 8dB is the expected decrease in sound level or not. But I can tell you this, 8dB decrease means, you have decreased the power level of noise to 1/6 of the original. Now that is a lot of difference.
I just came back in town today and drove about 500 miles. First 250 miles I did with cupped MT/Rs. The average roughly was 77dB, 1dB than when I did crude sound measurement a few days ago.
Today I did about 250miles and the average seems roughly 75dB with my new all terrain tires, DickCepek FC IIs. The difference felt is significant and my jeep feel so much quieter.
I will update thread when I get some of the measurements.

They actually had the dynamat in there for heat reasons IIRC, so a firm mounting might not have been as important as it would have been for sound.
I'll try and scan the article for you or get some pictures of it, it's only a couple pages long. |

Yeah, I thought the same thing, looks like they had some decent results though.
I wonder how well the Herc adheres to the dynamat though, if it worked well it could be a good project, but if it just chips and everything, it's more trouble than it is worth.
My TJ will probably see 15k/year or so, so if a couple hundred dollars can make it a bit more comfortable, I'm all for it |
